Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Naimi was born in 1935 in ar-Rakah, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. He started working for the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO) in 1947. Through one of ARAMCO's educational programs, Al-Naimi became a student at the International College in Beirut and studied at the American University in Beirut. He then pursued further education in the United States at Lehigh University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology in 1962. Later, he obtained a Master's degree in Hydrology and Economic Geology from Stanford University.
After completing his studies, Al-Naimi returned to ARAMCO in 1957. He worked as a production controller at the Abqaiq oil field in 1969 and later became the deputy superintendent and then superintendent of the Northern Province Production Department from 1972 to 1975. He was appointed Vice President of ARAMCO for production matters in 1975 and Vice President for petroleum in 1978. In 1980, Al-Naimi was elected to the Board of Directors of ARAMCO.
In 1981, he was appointed Executive Vice President for Oil and Gas Affairs, and in 1983, Al-Naimi became the President of Saudi ARAMCO, becoming the first Saudi national to hold this position. He later became the President and CEO of ARAMCO when both positions were combined. On August 2, 1995, Al-Naimi was appointed as the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Saudi Arabia, succeeding Hisham Nazer. The position of President and CEO of ARAMCO was then passed on to Abdullah S. Jum'ah.
In December 2010, the Saudi Supreme Petroleum Council, under the chairmanship of King Abdullah, requested Al-Naimi to appoint his successor as the Minister of Petroleum. Al-Naimi is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). In 2008, he was named one of the most influential people in the world by Time magazine, and in 2011, Bloomberg Markets included him in their list of the "50 Most Influential People."
